I once started a class in the gym Fridays at 4pm that I called Friday45 (F45) as it was a 45 minute workout. There was nothing running then and the time slot worked. It was part of an Athletics class I ran in the gym for 3 years. Basic strength and conditioning workouts Nothing fancy. No Olympic Lifts or high skill gymnastics, which is the gym’s jam. The class came into being after a small training group of hairdressers, from Black 2 Blond (B2B) the salon around the block from the gym, agreed to train with me for free so I could get coaching experience. We completed the gym’s beginners sessions and they wanted to stay on, but outside of group class times. We took up residence in an Open Gym slot. Slowly, the class morphed into a separate gym offering, with non-gym members able to buy memberships and gym members able to attend as part of their membership. In the end, we had a committed group and then one day it was cancelled. The class no longer fit the gym’s business model and out it went. On a small scale, I learned what it is like to be let go unexpectedly. One day things are one way and then they are not and you have to rally up. Brene Brown says the only guarantee if you put yourself out there as a creative is that you will get your ass kicked. “You can bet on it” she says and she is right. I have lost count of the kicks. In these scenarios, you can start to question your sanity in keeping at it. Maybe the universe it trying to tell you something? Brene cautions, there will be critics (you might be your own worst!) and you need to know how to deal with them to stay your course. Better to have tried and failed than never to have tried but man it can be a tough slog. How to grow again? This blog is part of the figuring out process. Perhaps talking about struggles isn’t good for business but highlight reels aren’t my thing. Two things I know for sure, consistent working out and eating well are a must. When the chips are down, if you can find it within, dial down hard on your food and movement. Processed crap and languishing about do not facilitate a return to action. Find the learning and look forward, not back.
